IEPL, Relay, and Direct Routes Compared

Route names describe the path data takes from local access to the target exit. A route type is not guaranteed to be faster on every network; a more reliable choice considers the use case, region, and current connection performance.

IEPL: More controlled inter-network paths

CONTROLLED TRANSIT

IEPL focuses less on the exit city than on using a more controlled path for the access and cross-border transport segments. When public networks exchange data, traffic may pass through multiple routing decisions. Congested interconnection points or temporary path changes can affect web requests, video segments, and persistent connections. By arranging transmission more deliberately, IEPL can reduce unnecessary detours, making it better suited to office collaboration, online meetings, larger file transfers, and periods of concentrated evening use where sustained connectivity matters.

These routes generally cost more to build and maintain than ordinary public-network paths, and their resources are managed more strictly. Do not choose based on the “IEPL” label alone; confirm that the exit region matches the target service. For content in Japan, prefer a Japanese exit; for North American services, choose the corresponding region. If the region is wrong, even a stable access path may increase the distance to the target.

Relay Routes: Separate Access and Exit Paths

RELAYED ACCESS

A relay route first sends the local connection to a suitable access point, then forwards it to the target region. This can avoid some unstable direct interconnections while preserving broad regional coverage. For everyday browsing, streaming, AI tools, and general work, relay routes often balance path quality and resource cost effectively.

More hops do not automatically make a relay route better. The access point, exit direction, and target service region must work together. If Tokyo is a smooth access point from your local network while the target service is in North America, choose a route that connects through Asia-Pacific and then continues to North America. A distant exit with mediocre access quality may perform worse. When performance fluctuates, try different relay entry points within the same target region before switching regions repeatedly.

Direct Routes: Simple Paths and Broad Regional Choice

DIRECT TRANSIT

Direct routes connect to the target exit through the public network, with a relatively simple path structure. They suit environments with good interconnection and a clearly defined target region. Direct routes also expand coverage across countries and cities for tasks that require a specific regional exit. For example, you can try a direct exit in the relevant region when visiting local websites, checking regional results, or keeping a remote-work system aligned with the business location.

Direct paths depend more heavily on public-network conditions between your local provider and the target region, so results may vary by access network. A route that performs smoothly during the day may need to switch to a relay or IEPL path during busy periods. With direct routes, prioritize the correct region, then evaluate connection stability; do not draw conclusions from city distance alone.

Choose Exits and Routes by Use Case

Route selection comes down to two questions: which region should the target service see, and which path is most stable from your current network? Identify the region first, then compare routes in that region. This is usually more effective than switching randomly through a global list.

WEB

Everyday Browsing and International Websites

Everyday web pages generate many short requests while loading images, scripts, and API data in parallel. Start with a nearby Asia-Pacific exit that currently connects smoothly to reduce unnecessary cross-region traffic. If the site clearly targets North America or Europe, switch to the corresponding region. Browsing does not require staying on one route; when pages stall, try another route in the same region first. Change the exit country only when the content is region-dependent.

VOD

Streaming and Region-Specific Content

For streaming, the content library’s region matters more than the distance between the node and the viewer. Use a Japanese exit for Japanese content and a North American exit for North American libraries. If the old region still appears after switching, reopen the app or clear the previous session so the platform can reassess the exit location. If playback buffers frequently, switch from direct to relay or IEPL within the same country. Changing only one variable makes it easier to identify the cause.

AI

ChatGPT, Claude, and Other AI Tools

AI tools often assess exit region, account session, and continuity of access together, so a stable, consistent region matters more than frequent switching. Choose a supported region first, then keep the same exit while signing in and using the service. If you need another route, prefer one in the same country to limit sudden region changes during a session. For long responses, file uploads, or sustained conversations, try a relay or IEPL route first.

Gaming and Interactive Apps

Games and interactive apps care more about path continuity and sudden jitter than simple distance. Choose an exit near the game service region rather than automatically selecting the nearest city. Start with Japan if the service region is Japan, or compare routes in North America if it is there. Avoid frequent cross-region switching after the connection is established to prevent session rebuilds. If direct access is unstable, compare it with a relay or IEPL path in the same region.

WORK

Remote Work and Business Systems

Remote work often involves web sign-ins, online meetings, cloud documents, and continuous synchronization. Choose a route based on the region where the business system is hosted. If the team’s services are in Singapore, start with a Singapore exit; if the main systems are in Europe, choose the relevant European region. For long sessions, minimize exit changes and prefer a more controlled path. If the business system restricts sign-in regions, keep the exit country consistent with the normal work area.

How to Troubleshoot Connection Issues

Change only one condition at a time when troubleshooting. Changing the country, route type, and client settings together makes the result impossible to compare. A fixed sequence helps identify whether the issue lies with local access, the inter-network path, or the target service.

  1. Confirm the Target Region

    First check which exit country the website, streaming library, AI tool, or work system requires so the region itself is not mismatched.

  2. Switch Paths Within the Same Region

    Keep the exit country unchanged and compare direct, relay, and IEPL routes to see whether browsing, playback, or persistent connections recover.

  3. Try a Nearby Exit

    If the target service does not require a specific country, try a nearby region. When it has explicit regional rules, do not test across regions.

  4. Check the Client Session

    Disconnect the old connection, establish a new session, confirm that system traffic is using the selected route, and reopen the target service.
